Beyond hot flushes: noticing changes in your body

The impact on your day matters as much as the name of a symptom.

More than one kind of change

Period changes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, muscle or joint aches, vaginal dryness and bladder symptoms can occur during the menopause transition. Some women notice little change; others need more support. Symptoms can also have other causes.

Private concerns deserve attention too

Discomfort during sex, leakage or vaginal symptoms are valid reasons to seek care. You can write a concern down and hand it to a clinician if saying it aloud feels difficult. Start with: “This is affecting my comfort, and I would like to discuss it.”

Know when to get checked

Any vaginal bleeding after 12 months without a period needs medical assessment. Discuss unusually heavy or prolonged bleeding too. Do not use a symptom list to explain away a new or concerning change.
